PyPg, the Local Python User Group located in Perugia, Italy, will meet Wednesday, January 25th, at Evonove Coworking Space (map).

Agenda:

We will discuss about the project Kimol, a kinect interface to the 3D molecular viewer software Pymol.

After a brief introduction to the Kinect technology and how we used it with Python, we'll make a short trip inside the (python) code of the project.

As usual, snacks and beer for all the participants - free entrance!

PythonCamp Cologne on 16th/17th April 2011

Hi all!

On April 16th and 17th 2011 the second PythonCamp Cologne, Germany will be held. From a one day event last year we now go for two days! So if you are in the area and interested, please come over!

The event is held in Barcamp format which means that no program is defined before the event but organized by all the participants during the event. So if you want to discuss something, give a presentation of a project or just share ideas, this is for you.

And the best: Entrance is free! :-)

You can register for it either on Facebook or the Etherpad. Esp. last minute information will also be shared via twitter.

Language will probably be mostly german but if english speaking guests attend we will of course accomodate them and switch to english.

A PyCon Tutorial Preview in Dallas THIS Saturday

This year, DFW Pythoneers member Paul Kippes has prepared a tutorial for the US PyCon titled:

"Creating GUI Applications in Python using Qt"

In order to practice giving his tutorial before PyCon, Paul has volunteered to teach it here locally during the upcoming 2nd Saturday meeting, Sat Feb 12, from 2:30pm till 5:30pm.

This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in building cross-platform GUI apps using Python, as it will provide a introduction to using one of the major GUI frameworks: QT, which is the basis for KDE, as well as many cross platform applications running under Linux, Mac OS, Windows, Symbian, Embedded Linux, Windows Mobile, and Maemo.

Registration is free, but seating is limited, please reserve your spot by emailing Brad Allen and confirm that you will attend. If more than 15 people register, we may need to move it to a different venue, so please let Brad know as soon as possible whether you plan to attend.

Please arrive by 2pm so that the tutorial can start at 2:30pm sharp.

As long as we stay below 15 people, the meeting will be held at the usual DFW Pythoneers meeting location,

COhPy: Writing and Using Django Reusable Apps (For Beginners)

The Central Ohio Python Users Group is starting its second year with a bang. With over 100 members in the meetup, and regularly 20+ in attendance, as well as a weekly "Dojoe", the Central Ohio Python Users Group has something for every Python or aspiring Python programmer.

On January 31 at 6:30pm at TechColumbus, Isaac Kelly, who gets paid to write Python every day (lucky guy!), will be presenting the reusable app paradigm of Django by example. Django is designed so that you can easily create and reuse components. He will be walking through an example project, which places to use reusable components of projects like Pinax, and which areas to go off on your own.

Python.de-Sprint at Leipzig Python User Groupt Meeting on Tuesday, November 9, 2010

We will have a sprint about Python.de.

Our goals are to gather important information about Python in German-speaking countries and to provide a good German starting point for newbies. We use the Python-based CMS Plone. Everybody is invited to help. The temporary home of the portal is http://python.inqbus.de and will eventually move to python.de. You can register on the site to get access. Please let us know if you like to get even more involved.

We will meet on November 9, 2010, 8:00 pm at the training center of Python Academy in Leipzig, Germany (How to find us)

Food and soft drinks are provided. Please send a short confirmation mail to info@python-academy.de, so we can prepare appropriately.

Everybody who uses Python, plans to do so or is interested in learning more about the language is encouraged to participate.

While the meeting language will be mainly German, English speakers are very welcome. We will provide English interpretation if needed.

Python BarCamp April, 17th at Cologne, Germany organized by pyCologne

On April 17th, 2010, pyCologne, the Python-User-Group of Cologne, Germany, welcomed about 20 participants at the first German Python-BarCamp at the site of GFU Cyrus AG in Cologne.

GFU, a Cologne based IT training company (http://www.gfu.net/), provided a set of three conference rooms, their cafeteria, and an assembly hall, which built up a perfect venue for the barcamp.

O'Reilly (http://www.oreilly.de/) sponsored selected Python-books, which were raffled in addition to a special Barcamp T-Shirt among the participants. The start of the event was awaited with eager anticipation since at a barcamp the participants themselves take care of the content. pyCologne took care of the organizational preparations.

After a warm welcome from Reimar Bauer and Muharem Hrnjadovic on behalf of pyCologne and a brief round of introductions, planning of the slots using the prepared Flipcharts started immediately. Planning just finished, the participants swarmed out to join the different sessions: PyPy, Plone, MoinMoin-2.0, Django, imap2xmpp und bildout. Couchdb, from frameworks to libraries, 3D-graphics programming, Midi as well as Python and Java found enthusiastic participants, following the scheme "presentations last as long as it takes or the next slot is about to start".

To get motivated again after the lunch break with pizza and drinks, Christopher Arndt invited the participants into the sunny assembly-hall for the lightning talks: speakers talk for five minutes max, the goal is to entertain. After four minutes the moderator signals that their is one minute left and breaks off the talk after five minutes unconditionally.

Topics were: Coworking Project Cologne, pyCologne@FrOSCon, PyPy, RPX für Plone und Twitter, Zotero, html2wiki, Web-Development Client vs. Server, scriptutil for fun and profit and Django OR-M im Backend.

Again keen for action, the afternoon started with further sessions. Easily noticed by the noise of the keyboards many of the new learned topics were transferred immediately to the internet. Using the hashtags #pybar and #pybarcamp everybody from inside and outside the camp could follow the event.

After the closing session and the group-photo (http://www.flickr.com/photos/12317756@N08/4530807440/sizes/o/) it was time to say goodbye to GFU.

The participants enjoyed the rest of the evening at the restaurant "La Mäng" in a cosy atmosphere having food and drink and friendly conversation.

This time we had a talk about the network-tool Scapy:

"Scapy - Experimenting with network packets" (Dirk Loss)

Dirk introduced the network-tool "Scapy" which allows building as well as analysing network packets. There are some similarities between Scapy and Wireshark, a well known graphical network analyser. Wireshark is also known by its predecessor Etherreal.

Scapy features building and manipulating network packets using an extended python-command-prompt. The '/' (division)-operator is overloaded to represent nesting of a packet-part into another. To nest an ICMP (ping echo-request) packet into an IP-packet you would write: i=IP(dst="8.8.8.8")/ICMP()

Besides the creation of network packets you can use Scapy to:

Send out network packets
Sniff network packets and analyse them on the command-line
Visualize a conversation using the command conversation()
Visualize the nested structure of an IP-packet with the command pdfdump()
Create a series of packets with slight, random faults for testing purposes ("Fuzzing")

Analysing complex, high level protocols is difficult. However, Scapy offers state machines to keep track of the conversation.

Dirk did a live presentation of all the mentioned features, which led to a lot of interesting questions during and after the talk.

During the rest of the meeting we talked about the following other issues:

Question for good python introductory material: "Dive into Python" was recommended.
Martin looks for a solution to generate comments within a C++-library into doc-strings of the corresponding Python-wrapper. There were some answers. However, we could not find a final strategy for doing that. Suggestions are very welcome!
We would like to encourage participants to do, additionally to the classic talks, short talks or live presentations which need less preparation. The estimated duration of a talk should be announced beforehand for better organization.
Reimar proposes to organize a "Python-Day" in Cologne and to invite other Python-User-Groups from Germany as well to participate. We will look for 1 or 2 suitable days on a weekend.

Django syndication. Generating Media RSS feeds from Photologue galleries - (Lucas Taylor)

Django makes it trivial to generate RSS feeds and reasonably easy to create custom syndication formats. A demo application was presented showing multiple galleries using the CoolIris plugin for consuming the feeds.

iftd, a multi-transport protocol file transfer program - (Jude Nelson)

iftd is a data transfer daemon that allows clients to access files via a variety of transfer protocols (http, ftp, bittorrent, et al.). Protocol and error handling are encapsulated in the iftd daemon, freeing clients from having to perform these functions as it chooses the best available transfer protocol. It is a component of the Stork project at the University of Arizona.

At least 4 TuPLE members are planning to attend PyCon 2010 in Atlanta next month, so our March meeting will be a recap of the conference. February remains a mystery.

Alexander gave a detailed overview of Google Wave. He presented the elements of Google Wave (Wave, Wavelet, Blip) as well as its architecture. Furthermore, he described Wave's extensibility using Robots and Gadgets and presented some examples among them a Robot for Syntax-Highlighting.

Andi showed how to program robots for Wave using Python. As an example he presented a robot which sets the color of a certain letter sequence to red while typing a text.

Todays Talk: How to automate and extend Windwows-Applications with pywin32 (Andreas Schreiber)

Andreas introduced the pyWin32 Module, which makes it possible to communicate via the COM-Interface to Windows-Applications.

COM uses the Client-Server-Model
Nearly each peace of software on Windows provides a COM-Interface, mainly the Office-Applications.
It is possible to "remote control" applications. Andreas presented an example which controls Word via the Python-Command-Line.
Moreover, COM makes it possible to register Python-Code for events of Office-Applications: Andreas showed an example which catches the "turning-page"-event from a Power-Point presentation and sends the page heading out to Twitter.
It can be quite difficult to examine the COM-Interface provided by different applications. There are some tools available like COM-Browser and makepy. Moreover, it is a good idea to have a look into the help-file of the application, which often contains an application specific documentation of the COM-Interface.

DFW Pythoneers 4th Saturday Meeting

This Saturday is the usual 4th Saturday meeting of the DFW Pythoneers. We're meeting at the coworking facility Company|Dallas in Richardson at noon. Bring your lunch, they have free drinks. You can find directions at their website.

We'll start with informal discussion about what's happening in Python, along with some "what does this code do" Python examples I found in the unit-testing code for the cPython interpreter. Would you recognize a backtracking generator? How about a lazy list iterator? For a taste, check out test_generators.py

There will also be simple examples for those new to Python.

While we start gathering at noon to talk over lunch, the formal presentation won't start until 2pm. I'll be giving a presentation from PyCon 2009 about Python Namespaces, Code Objects and How They Work Together Under The Hood.

And if there is interest, I'd like to continue sprinting on reimplementing the M.U.L.E. game using the Pyglet OpenGL framework. We can split into teams tackling two pieces reusable in other games:

An Avahi/Bonjour-based network component for detecting the presence of all active games of a certain kind (e.g. M.U.L.E.) on the LAN, determining which are currently open for new players (i.e. in the game start phase) and returning this information for presenting in some kind of GUI. A user can then select which game to join. Because of the nature of the network, this should be implemented in an asynchronous fashion.

A Pyglet-based component for animating a character walking across the screen in all eight directions. It should contain a step generator that controls the rate of walking, and listen to events from the keyboard (or joystick or network) telling it in which direction to walk. It must be possible for multiple instances to exist so that players can concurrently walk their characters around the board. Other components should be able to subscribe to walk events to handle actions based on where the character is walking including slowing or aborting the walk.

We can discuss perhaps doing this in the style of a Code Dojo:

Todays Talk: Django (Daniel Hepper)

Django is a framework for creating web-applications which supports the following technologies/approaches:

MVC - Model-View-Controller
O/R-Mapper
Auto-Admin Interface
User-friendly URLs
Templates
User-/Session-Management

Firstly, Daniel gave a general introduction into creation of web-sites beginning with static HTML, over CGI-Scripts to modern web-frameworks .

Secondly, he introduced Django by creating a Django application to manage "Running-Events" like e.g. Marathons.

Django features the semi-automatic creation of applications using manage-scripts, which for example generate database-tables from models written down in Python-code. It is possible to generate Python-code from database-tables as well.

The create-, update-, and view-pages can be created based on templates. However, it is possible to use generic views to display data from a database without programming.

Report vom EuroPython 2009

This year's EuroPython took place in Birmingham (UK). Location was the Birmingham Conservatoire. There were about 450 participants.

From pyCologne AndreasSchreiber, JanUlrichHasecke, Henning und ReimarBauer met in Birmingham.

For EuroPython advance booking for the conference as well as for talks is necessary.

There were 6 tracks in parallel. Therefore, it was not possible to attend all talks of interest. However there are recordings.

Speakers have to apply to EuroPython in advance. New topics are favored over the repetition of older talks.

Furthermore, an Open-Space for free exchange of information is provided. Food, drink and coffee are provided as well.

Participation fee is around 90 Pounds (GBP) für 3 days.

In this talk, Chris will discuss an application that he has developed using the Google Application Engine (GAE) and Amazon Web Services (AWS). The application is designed to leverage the identity, scalability, and availability provided by GAE to implement public interfaces and then utilize Amazon EC2 and S3 where the GAE restrictions are too limiting. Python is used to implement both the GAE application code and code running in Amazon EC2 instances.

PyOhio 2009, the second annual Python programming mini-conference for Ohio and surrounding areas, will take place Saturday-Sunday, July 25-26, 2009 at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. A variety of activities are planned, including tutorials, scheduled talks, Lightning Talks, and Open Spaces. PyOhio will be free of charge.

PyOhio invites all interested people to submit proposals for scheduled talks and tutorials. PyOhio will accept abstracts on any topics of interest to Python programmers.

Standard presentations are expected to last 40 minutes with a 10 minute question-and-answer period. Other talk formats will also be considered, however; please indicate your preferred format in your proposal. Hands-on tutorial sessions are also welcomed. Tutorial instructors should indicate the expected length

PyOhio is especially interested in hosting a Beginners' Track for those new to Python or new to programming in general. If your proposal would be suitable for inclusion in the Beginners' Track, please indicate so. Organizers will work with speakers and instructors in the Beginners' Track to help them coordinate their talks/tutorials into a smooth, coherent learning curve for new Python users.

The TuPLE (Tucson, AZ) group met on Monday, April 20th, attended by 10 members.

We had some good conversation and it was great to see more new faces show up.

Rich Saunders gave a presentation on Pycon 09, touching on some issues relevant to his work at Rincon Research.
General discussion of Pycon structure (tutorials, general conference, sprints), Lightning Talks, and Open Spaces.

3 of our members attended Pycon. Generally agreed the lightning talks and open spaces were popular and enjoyable conference additions.

in addition to the talks and general conference videos. These look to

We also briefly discussed setting up a website for the group using Google App Engine as an exercise/group project. There seems to be some interest in possible group projects or hack days, but there wasn't much in the way of commitment moving forward. We aren't using meetup.com so it would be nice to have an RSVP function and a more active web presence than the google group.

Encouraged members to bring in their projects/code samples for group review and discussion for the next meeting.

April Pyowa Wrapup

Our meeting was pretty poorly attended last night, but I think the four of us had fun discussing PyCon and then figuring out what we want to do to promote our group. We are currently thinking about getting a Google Ad for it. We went ahead an started a twitter feed using "pyowa" as our username. We may try plastering Iowa State University with flyers for our next meeting too.

Next time we plan to have am intro to sqlalchemy presentation and some kind of code review of a GIS model dump. We hope that one will be better attended. Until then.

TuPLE (Tucson, AZ) - March recap

There seems to be a good bit of interest in Python in the Tucson area, with new attendees from the UofA and several local companies who use Python for their daily work.

Ben Reynwar gave us an intro to Django, including basic project setup and routing urls to python methods.

Lucas Taylor introduced the Twisted framework and basic concepts including the Reactor, Deferreds, and Protocols. Demo code was shown to illustrate the basics of a simple server implementation.

Dave Thompson gave his Flash & Python talk. Included an overview of what Flash and Flex are, the AMF (Adobe Messaging Format), and python tools used for parsing and encoding objects in AMF. Discussed pyAMF and his own new library AmFast. AmFast is an AMF3 encoder/decoder implemented for speed. Initial tests show an 18x increase in speed for the encode/decode operations. Pyowa Meeting This Week

TuPLE (Tucson, AZ) - First official meeting recap

TuPLE (Tucson Python Language Enthusiasts) is off to a good start. Our first official meeting went well, with 6 attending.

Chris Merle started us off with an overview of Plone and two products that help to
inspect and interrogate the python objects in use:
DocFinderTab
DocFinderTab adds a tab to the ZMI that parses the docstrings of the class of the object you are using and presents them to you in the tab.
Clouseau
Clouseau embeds a live ajax based python interpreter into your plone site for debugging purposes. It looks to have some nice autocompletion features and lets you poke around the internals of a live instance.

Chris then demoed his news portlet modification that shows an excerpted portion of the news items (vs just the title and link), and explained how DocFinderTab and Clouseau both helped him determine which object attributes were going to be useful for displaying the content.

We had some good conversation about general interests, IDEs, reference books, and what kinds of presentations everyone is interested in. Django, advanced python, and C extensions are heading up the list for the future.

Misc. Notes:

Civilization 4 allows mod authors to use Python to modify aspects of
the game. Hopefully we'll hear more about it in the future.
PyScripter - Free Windows Editor/IDE
Core Python (http://corepython.com/) was recommended as a good
reference, others thought the online docs were adequate.
A couple of members are repeat pycon attendees. This year we'll have 2
or 3 attending. April's meeting will be good for a pycon recap.
A python obfuscation tool was discussed

DFW Pythoneers, 2nd Sat: Topics We Covered

The 2nd Saturday of February meeting of the DFW Pythoneers went well, with 5 people showing up even though it was Valentine's Day. We covered a grab bag of topics I'd researched ahead of time. It was part of a new plan of mine to structure our meetings a bit, by each month covering (1) a module in the standard library, (2) a programming concept, (3) a source code walkthrough and (4) a few "how would you do this?" type of questions. Feedback on this approach is welcome.

For the module in the standard library, we briefly covered the new print() function in Python 2.6:

and then the new .format() method on strings, as an alternative to the C style sprintf("%s %d", a, b) approach. The format() approach is more powerful than the % operator but takes some getting used to.

Feedback from some attendees is that it is too complicated, so we also covered the much simpler but less powerful Template module in the standard library.

For the programming concept, we studied sequence slicing and subscripting.

While most of us have a good grasp on simple subscripting and from:to slicing, there are some deeper aspects here, a few of which can be seen in:

  a[4:5:5]    # extended slicing, with a stride
  a[3, 4, 5]  # a slice list
  a[2:4, 5:7] # list of slices
  a['a':'c']  # applying slicing to non-integers and non-ordinal content

We also looked at the deceptively simple shallow copy operation:

a[:]

and how it differs between mutable (list) and immutable (tuple) types.

And then we looked at the little-known builtin type 'Ellipsis' and how it can be used in your own programs.

In order to experiment with the various subscript/slicing syntaxes, we defined our own __getitem__, __setitem__ and __delitem__ methods to print out what was received:

Next we took a little trip over to look at the issues and concerns involved in the simple idea of sorting items in a collection:

We studied the difference between the .sort() method and the sorted() builtin function, and the three arguments (cmpfn, key, reverse) you can pass to either one.

This also brought us into the operator module which has several useful functions for extracting values on which to sort from items, such as:

  key=operator.itemgetter(1)
  key=operator.attrgetter('eggs')

and we talked about (but didn't dig into) the well-known design pattern of "decorate-sort-undecorate".

For the questions of "how would you do this?" we discussed:

How can you test for whether a variable is defined?

How do you tell if a method is bound or unbound?

How do you 'unbind' a method?

How do you set an attribute whose name is not a legal Python name?

How can you conditionally define methods in a class?

How do you change the data underneath a mutable sequence without breaking any existing bindings to the sequence itself? Hint: Look in site.py.

For the source code walkthrough we examined the implementation of the string Template class in lib/python/string.py. The interesting part was its use of a metaclass to post-process the extraction strings defined in the class into compiled regular expression objects.

And by special request by a member, we looked into how Python at startup arranges its module import path (sys.path) to find zip/eggs and parses 'path configuration files' (.pth) that alter that path. We also covered the privileged status of 'site' directories over other directories on the path and did a very quick walkthrough of the source in lib/python/site.py as well as the lib/python/site-packages/site.py installed by setuptools.

That filled our 3-hour session and we wrapped up with chatter about the rapidly approaching PyCon and the early registration deadline.

There are some translations into other languages like Chinese and Spanish
Ralf has started a German translation which he puts on his own homepage for the moment. He invites people to take part and help out translating articles from PyMOTW.

Network- and Server-Programming with Python (KlausBremer)

Klaus offered a broad introduction to network-programming with Python. He covered different types of communication with increasing complexity, presenting sample programs as well as specific benchmark results.
Foundations of network-programming and the different layers: low-level, sockets, high-level (like: HTTP, FTP, etc.)
Presentation of an "echo"-server and its corresponding client using a socket-connection.
Introduction of the BaseHTTPServer, which is used as well by the Wiki-System MoinMoin.
Several techniques to increase responsiveness of servers by holding and processing many connections at a time:

ThreadingTCPServer: Using several threads for processing.
ForkingTCPServer: Using several processes instead of threads.
At this point, there developed a lively discussion among the participants about the implementation within the Standard-Libray. The Standard-Library delegates only the processing of received data to a thread or process. The reception even of large blocks of data still remains within the main thread/process.

Introduction of select() and poll() as methods to process network data from many connections asynchronously without the need to use several threads and processes.
As highlevel frameworks CherryPy and Twisted are named.

CherryPy and Adobe Flex (Jeff Hinrichs) - Jeff showed a standard CherryPy + Cheetah application that he used as a base and then how he integrated Adobe Flex for a spiffed up interface. A code walk through was given featuring the MXML used and the Flex Builder for Linux alpha
Wing IDE (Charles Kaminski) - Charles had a great presentation on the Wing IDE Charles ran a completely live presentation showing code intelligence, debugging and lots of other goodies that Wing has to offer Python programmers. It was such a good presentation that I am seriously considering buying it.
A number of people attending retold their stories of their first exposure to Python and how they get to use Python at work.

It was a great meeting. Charles brought up the idea of possibly finding a mid-town watering hole and having the meetings in a back room. So if anyone knows of a place that supports both libations and presentations in the mid-town area please let us know.

Happy New Year to all!

First of all I apologize for not having posted the notes for the meetings of pyCologne from September to December. I have been bound to other commitments and had too little time left.

Therefore, I decided to cover our latest meetings (September to December) in one post:

September, 10th.:

Discussion of creating a pyCologne-Yearbook as a collection of all the talks held within the year. There has been a lively discussion about what to do and how: Creation of a leaflet with some of the most interesting talks, to give away at public events; creating a catalog of the talks using a standard template, creation of templates for slides (using REST S5). Since then, we have discussed and created a form within the German Python Wiki wich can be found at: http://wiki.python.de/User_Group_K%C3%B6ln/VorschlagVortragsTemplate
Günter Jantzen held a talk about Python 3.0 (alias Python 3000). Among other topics he covered changes of string-handling within Python. Python 3.0 does use Unicode-Strings as a Standard. Instead of the %-operator for formatting tasks the new format string-method is used. As marker for substitutions the curly-brackets {} are used. Furthermore, list-comprehension-like syntax is introduced for sets and dicts.

Todays talks by Rebecca Breu and Ralf Schönian were dedicated to wxPython a Python GUI-Toolkit.

Rebecca gave a detailed overview of programming with wxPython introducing the concept of wx-Events and covering the main widgetes like static-text and entry field.
She concluded with a demomstration of the grid-widgets which allows to plugin self-written renderers and editors into the grid.
Ralf gave a presentation of his wxPython based vocabulary-trainer.
The book "wxPython in Action" was introduced.

November, 12th:

Today we had another talk within our GUI-series: pyGTK by Andi Albrecht:

Andi introduced the basics of pyGTK and the use of signals for the event-handling.
He gave an overview of the available documentation and introduced some widgets and layout-facilities aka. boxes.
Furthermore, he described the organisation of pyGTK in several modules and gave an overview about Glade the Interface-Designer for GTK.

December, 10th:

Today we celebrated pyColognes second anniversary and had our christmas party. Many thanks to Uwe Döbereiner for offering his own rooms for the party. We enjoyed nice conversation, with food and drink supplied by all the members.
As a highlight of the evening Rebecca Breu gave a talk about the perfomance of Santa-Claus sleigh in comparison with the worlds best supercomputers and as well her own laptop :-).

DFW Pythoneers, 4th Sat July, Topics Covered

For the 4th Saturday meeting of July, we had a good group show up for the beginners session at 1pm. The target audience were existing programmers new to Python. We had 10 people besides myself there and then at the regular 2pm start time, some people left and some came in, raising it to 12 people. I presented on the underlying concepts of Python that make it easy to learn yet powerful.

We covered introspection at the Python prompt, using dir(), type(), id() and help() to examine your environment as well as the useful "python -v" and "python -i" arguments. Then we got into names and values and how they are organized into namespaces everywhere you turn in Python. We got into the differences between 'is' and '==', mutability, shared vs non-shared structures and whether names are by-ref or by-value. I went over the simple values then the compound values like mappings, sequences and sets.

Around 2pm when the main meeting began we went over how a Python source file is structured, how it gets converted into multiple codeblocks, which are executed immediately and which are executed later. This was a tricky concept for some with lots of discussion. We covered how the Python module system is derived from that for Modula-3, the various kinds of import statements, the true meaning of the global statement (i.e. not really global overall), how modules are aggregated into a navigable top-level set of in-memory namespaces and some of the metadata you can find in them, like __name__ and __file__.

We took a look at the most common modules all programmers should know, such as __builtins__, sys, os, os.path, string and re (derived from Perl), and a bit on the types module. We reviewed the various control structures that Python gives us and also the ones it lacks, such as switch/case and do/while. We looked at the exception model of Python, how it differs from other languages in its continuability and restartability and the correct usage of exceptions in Python for error conditions, not normal control flows.

We touched lightly on the underlying behavior protocols of Python, for object, number, sequence, mapping, iterator and buffer, how Python uses protocols instead of class derivation for grouping behavior. We then got into Python's idea of OOP, the topmost object class, initializers/destructors and the binding of self and what it means when you have an unbound method. We sidestepped metaclasses and the type hierarchy for now but got in a mention of ducks (type peeking), turtles (all the way down) and monkeys (patching).

And because it is such a key concept, we went over 'callables', how different things can be called transparently and the powerful argument passing mechanism Python uses re positional, keyword and default. We touched a bit on what it means to be iterable and moved on to the more concrete ideas of being subscriptable, from/upto, negative ordinals and subscript ranges or slicing. The third slice argument for skipping, forward and backward, was a popular topic.

It was almost 5pm by then and we were running out of time, so we briefly covered predicates; if a == b, if a is b, if a/not a, and the has_key (in) and hasattr tests. We wrapped up with a couple of short code walkthroughs just to see the concepts in use.

This kind of presentation was an experiment to see if there is a demand in our group for a return to the basics of the Python code instead of covering the web framework flavor of the week. Based on this first response, it seemed popular so we'll do it some more at future meetings. I'm going to try to break it apart into relatively standalone topic chapters and, when I do, make those materials available online.

I'll be at WorldCon during our 2nd Sat meeting of August but we'll do this again for the 4th Sat meeting.

Creation of strange pictures using Turtle-Graphics (Günter Jantzen):

Günter gave a short introduction into Turtle-Graphics and Python's Turtle-Graphics-Module and showed us
some amazing pictures:

The Turtle-Graphics module is based on Tkinter
The drawing scheme uses the model of a turtle which can advance forward and turn about a certain angle. While moving it draws a line.
Günter showed some graphics which based on a spiral drawing pattern.
He discussed the problem that float values can get inexact for certain big numbers and exponents. This problems are visible within the graphics and can be solved by using the modulo function.

The Hotwire-Shell (Michael Kesper):

Michael gave an introduction into the Hotwire-Shell, a modern, object-oriented shell.

Hotwire-Shell is written in Python and features a graphical user-interface.
Usual commands like "ls" and "cat" are available. The difference to a normal shell is the presentation of the result within a type specific view. (a directory-listing or a scrollable text-file-browser)
Results of previous commands are stored and can be used as input for the next command. (Dynamic creation of a pipeline.)
Hotwire-Shell supports various languages as command languages. e.g. Python

Information about Open-Source activities around Cologne (Thomas Richter):

Thomas informed us about open-source activities within the region of Cologne:

There is a collaboration of several User-Groups to get support from the City of Cologne. The idea is that the City of Cologne could provide facilities like rooms for user-group activities (Support of cultural activities is a municipial task.)
Cooperation with the "Kölner-Freiwilligen-Agentur" has been established. Members of this organization offer their own spare time for activities to help other people or to support social projects.
On 6th of september there will take place an event of the City of Cologne where the idea of a "House for free software" will be presented.
There was some discussion for possibilities to cooperate with companies and organizations.
